US Elections: Why Are The Democrats Courting Evangelicals?

Rev. Louis P. Sheldon, Chairman of the Traditional Values Coalition wrote in his statement concerning Tuesday's election results, in which some Evangelicals apparently voted for pro-life Democrats: The most surprising bit of data to come out of last night's election coverage was an exit poll by one of the networks which said that one in three voters who self-identified as 'Evangelical Christians' voted for Democrats. I know that some Evangelicals voted for Bob Casey, Jr. in Pennsylvania because they, wrongly I believe, felt it would even the score for the banishment of his pro-life father from the Democrat party. Some also voted for conservative Democrat Brad Ellsworth who is pro-life, pro-marriage and fairly conservative on a bunch of other issues.

It was interesting to see CNN/MSNBC describing some Democratic candidates as Evangelicals. For majority of the Evangelicals two can not coexist. Based on DNC history, party was voting against Christian values and one can hardly believe that Evangelicals went Democratic. In fact the Democrats picked some moderate candidates with some relation to Evangelicals. Of coarse it looks like Democrats gain Christian conservative votes, but it is just appearance. Hardly any current Democratic incumbent was voting in favor of pro-life, pro-family.

Brad Ellsworth and Bob Casey will be perfect examples, but than in the mix with Democratic leftwing veterans like Nancy Pelosi it would be hardly anything. Would new moderate Democrats vote in line with Nancy or as whole party will take strong swing to the right. In past few years Democratic Party took swing to the left and some moderate Democrats were disappointed by party leadership. Some even, pointed out that the time for moderate Democrats is gone.

Are we witnessing DNC transformation or just dress up to get more seats where the San-Francisco liberals are ruling, using moderates as bait for Evangelicals.
